Linux

Well Linux is a free operating system based on the Linux kernel which can come in many different distrubutions. I have been using Linux for the past 10 years or so on and off, recently I have been using the Operating System a lot more and gone more in depth of testing different versions. On this page you will be able to find out about different distributions of Linux and my view on them. Linux is mainly seen as a Server back end operating system, up until recently when it became ever more popular among both Business and Home users as a base operating system. The implications on a company using Linux rather than Windows is massive, firstly it is free and nearly all Linux distributions fall under GNU GPL licensing. Linux is used vastly for servers and security, I use it for a hardware firewall. Below are some of the Linux distributions which I have tried out to date and my view on them (click logo to go to the Distributors Website):

If you are looking to test out Linux or make a move from Windows to Linux then I would suggest going to the following site for help on choosing the right distrubution for you, there are a number of questions prior to a listing of results: Linux Distribution Chooser

Well I started using Ubuntu about 4 years ago, I used it as my main operating system for nearly a year! It is great and I managed to get a lot of things working on it such as World Of Warcraft and Quake 3. Ubuntu is very user friendly and can near enough be used by any user used to using a Windows based operating system.

Kubuntu is basically just Ubuntu with KDE. KDE is mainly a graphical Interface for Linux which makes it a lot like Windows Vista. The only draw back on using KDE is that it uses a lot of memory. I had Kubuntu on my computer for a few weeks and it has some nice features, but I would say stick to Gnome.

Debian is great and is my favorite Linux Distribution so far out of all the distributions that I have tested. The memory usage is minimal and it’s a very nice operating system to use on the standard platform Gnome. If you want to run KDE on it you can, but they only allow advanced users with sufficient Linux skills to install KDE on Debian, which is a really nice idea, as standard windows based users may know too little and mess up the whole operating system. I managed to install KDE on Debian and noticed very big changes in ram usage and stability, I can see why Debian is gnome based. Over all as a Gnome operating system Debian seems to be the best from my point of view. I also installed Debian on my laptop as a lot of the other distributions would not support the graphics device on it, so Debian is a all round winner for support and flexibility.

LinuxMint is a quite nice distribution, I have not tested it fully but I have ran it up from a boot disk. It’s styled to be a lot like Windows Vista but based on the Gnome system. A lot of users who are new to linux and are willing to make the move from Windows use this distribution of Linux as it is very similar in both styling and usability.
