Tropical Water

Well I have a better tank for the tropical setup, these tanks are very good and are quite cheap for what comes with them, they are made by Betta and can be picked up from the local Aqua shop for £50, although you can buy them online for around £35. The tank is a 35L tank which comes with filter and pump, for tropical fish all you need extra is a heater and then your away! There are a lot of different tropical water fish, most of which originate from the River Amazon. You can also setup Marine Tanks which in my mind are the best and have the best looking fish that you can buy, but the fish are very expensive! Tropical fresh water fish are best kept at a constant water temperature between 72f – 82f, I keep my tank at a constant temperature of 77f. The main type of fish that people keep in fresh tropical water tanks are from the Tetra family. Below are a couple photos of my tropical tank (these are photos of when I first got the tank with 6 general fish):

As you can see the tank is quite a nice setup, it looks totally different to that now as it has a lot more fish and changes to the scenery but you get the general idea of the size of the tank and how it looks. This tank also has oxygen weed as the pump does not create all that much oxygen. Below is a list of the fish which I have in the tank. I have added a lot more information for these fish as you can probably tell, as I know a bit more about tropical fish!

Neon Tetra

Well seeings as though Neons are the most common fresh water tropical fish I thought it would be good to put them first in the list! I have 4 normal Neons and 4 Head Neons (only their head has the neon glow), these fish are one of the most kept fish of all, because of their colorings and maximum size. They can be kept in a relatively small tank as they wont grow any bigger than 2″. Neons are a schooling fish so it is advised to keep a minimum of 4 in a tank.

Glowlight Tetra

Well the Glowlight’s are a lot like neons, they will travel together so again it is advisable to keep at least 4 together in a tank. The only thing I do notice about these is that when the water needs changing (which you should change 25% of the water weekly) they will hide away in the weed. If you have these and they are hiding this is a good indication that you need to change some of the water as they do like relatively clean water.

Head and Tail Light Tetra

Head and tail light tetras are very calm fish and are a great addition to a community fish tank. They are easy to breed if you intend to, they originate from the northern part of the river amazon. They do like clean and well oxygenated water tho.

Silver-Tipped Tetra

Silver-tipped tetras are some of the best and easiest fish to keep of all the tropical fish. They look a little bit like Neons but obviously only have normal colourings. They are a very communal fish and fit in well with other types of fish. These fish originate from eastern Brazil – river Sao Francisco.

Lemon Tetra

Lemon tetras are much the same as the head and tail light tetras, they are pretty friendly fish and in my case seem to keep well with all the types that I have. The only thing is they do like to have more than one of them otherwise they will swim around like mad in the back of the tank, so always advisable to get a pair of them.

Scissortail

Scissortails are one of the easiest of the tropical fish to keep, they are nice looking fish also. They do tend to jump when they get frightened so it is advised to ensure they cannot jump out of the tank! They can easily damage their bodies also when jumping which is something to look for. The ones I have don’t jump and seem fine together, as I have two of them. They are part of the Rasbora family and originate from the lakes in western Malaysia.

Blind Cave Fish

Although strange looking these fish are very intelligent for a fish species, they are blind and find their way around using sound waves. They are one of the best fish to keep, they eat fish food but will also eat off the bottom, they originate from Mexico.

Corydora

Corydoras are pretty much a must if you have a lot of fish, I have 3 Corydora there are a lot of different types of corydora so your best bet if you don’t know what to get is to ask your local Aquarium shop what type they would recommend for your tank. If you are going to get some I would personally get 3 which is how many I have in this tank. They are bottom feeders and will constantly clean the bottom, very nice looking fish too. They are part of the catfish family and originate from South America (River Amazon).
