Fresh Water
Well for cold water there is not a great deal of fish which you can keep. The general fish people keep in a cold water tank are goldfish. The tank is setup with a filter and a bubble supply, it is recommended that you also have oxygen weed in all tanks. My tank is a 60L and took no effort to setup, just shove the pump in on the side and the water in, you do need water stabilizer (you put in however much it states on the back), this helps to stabilize the water and stops it from misting. A water change is required every week, approx 25% of the water change, obviously you have to get the water in a bucket and set to the same temperature (even tho the water is not heated if you touch it, it’s quite a bit warmer than tap water!) as the tank water, and also ensure there’s stabilizer in the new water before it goes in, it’s best to leave this water to settle for 12 hours before placing it in the tank! Here are a couple of photos of my tank:

Below is a list of the fish which I have in this tank, as I said above you have next to no real choice of fish for cold water tanks which is why a lot of people setup Tropical and Marine tanks!
Danio

Leopard Danio Well I currently have put 2 Leopard Danios in this tank, they can be kept in both Fresh Cold Water or Fresh Tropical Water tanks. The reason I took them out of the Tropical tank is because they were attacking the Neons! It is not advisable putting these fish straight into cold water, the water must have settled to a higher temperature over say a month period. These fish are meant to be in tropical water but take well to colder water temperatures. These fish originate from India. |
Black Moor

Well the Black Moor is quite a common fish among cold water keepers, the only thing with them is they like a slight salt in the water, which obviously if you have other fish in there you can’t do! So if you are planning on having them in a tank with other fish it’s best to get one which is about half size grown. The one that I got to put in the tank was reduced and quite big. The only thing was the day after I put it in the tank I realised it had whitespot! Something to look out for when buying fish as it can kill your whole tank off if not treated immediately! These fish originate from China and Japan and are part of the Goldfish family. |
Oranda

Well I have a few different Oranda fish in the tank (hence two photos), this is the main fish which I have in the tank, they come in a variety of different colours. I have 2 Red Cap Orandas and 2 Black Oranda (they are not actually black, they are a mix of black and Brass Gold). Oranda’s also originate from China and Japan and are part of the Goldfish family. |
Fantails

Fantails are different to Oranda’s in that their heads are of normal shape. Fantails are about the best looking Fresh Water / Cold Water fish that you can have. I have 2 of these in this tank, they originate from China and Japan and are also part of the goldfish family. |
