Linux Page Updated
Well I have finally got around to updating the Linux page on the site. You can find information on distributions which I have tried out and my views on them. There are also links to download the distributions which I have reviewed on the page. Go check it out if you are interested in Linux or are planning on changing over to Linux from Windows!
KDE 4.2 on Debian 5.0
Well I have just rebuilt KDE on Debian and updated to the development version which is 4.2, in comparison to Kubuntu running KDE 4.1 and Debian on 4.2, Debian seems a lot smoother even though Debian is running on my single core Laptop! Kubuntu seems to install way too much stuff and seems to hog a lot of memory. Idle in KDE in Kubuntu nearly 700MB Ram are being used.
I will stick to Debian for now I think, although I may have to resort back to Gnome for the laptop if I’m to run server stuff such as SQL and Web Servers.
Debian 5.0 with KDE 3.5
Well I have just installed KDE on Debian on my laptop and it’s really nice, I have managed to fix the themes I downloaded myself as the ThemeLoader does not seem to want to work! I will upload some screenshots when I get chance! Seems really good tho, even though Debian is using a old version of KDE (Kubuntu uses 4.1 / 4.2). I’m just about to see if I can update to the latest version of KDE.
LinuxMint 6 Felicia
Well I thought I would download LinuxMint to put on my laptop but on boot-up it wouldn’t work (as I said below) I have found out now it’s down to the graphics drivers, so if I am going to run it on my Laptop I will have to edit the iso! but anyway, I tried it out last night on my desktop PC, although it was the 32 bit version it seemed to run quite nice. The only thing I didn’t like was the fact that it is too much like Windows, the start menu was a little bit different to windows, but it seems to have the same ideology as Windows. Obviously I did not test it to the full as it was only running off the CD, it seems nice for a Gnome client tho and looks a lot different to most gnome Linux distributions.
Debian 5.0
Well I have finally got Debian working after having a few problems with X Server. I am currently running Debian in Gnome which is rather boring after using KDE, but it is running on my laptop which will be running a webserver and sql etc for testing. I’m kind of thinking now tho that I should just install Kubuntu on the laptop now that I know what the problem is with the boot.
Debian seems quite stable, but for some reason the laptop fans are running full all the time? I will probably end up putting KDE on the laptop too, but sticking with gnome… for today!
Kubuntu 8.10 KDE 4.1
Well I thought that it was about time that I started using Linux again as I have got a bit bored of Vista 64, I’ve had non stop problems with Vista since I installed it, where the network keeps mysteriously dropping (with both the on board Ethernet and a new pci card). Anyway I thought I would try out Kubuntu 8.10, I mainly wanted something for my laptop as I am using it as a webserver and sql server for web testing (it’s where I test all these lovely layouts!). I downloaded the 32bit version in anticipation that it would work smoothly on my laptop…
Firstly I thought I would try it out just booting from the CD, seemed to work fine… then I installed it and it has a problem loading KDE (after login it pauses)! So after going through the support forum and finding that they did not know why it was pausing after login I thought I would try another version of Linux. I downloaded LinuxMint as I have heard a lot about it and people have said it is quite good… Booted from the CD (as you can’t install direct from the boot menu for some unknown reason), it seems you can only install when you are in the CD ran platform. On my laptop it would not run at all, there is a bug they know about but are still fixing!
Anyway I managed to install Kubuntu 8.10 KDE on my desktop PC and it seems to be working fine. I am currently just playing around with it at the moment but I like it more than Ubuntu. Everything seems pretty easy on it and I will probably stick to it on my Desktop PC. I am currently installing Debian on my laptop which I will probably go for Gnome rather than KDE as it is only a single core P4.
Ubuntu 8.04 64bit
Well recently I downloaded the new version of Ubuntu, there is a bit of a difference which is noticeable for transferring of files and there is a new style to the login etc. I managed to install World Of Warcraft on it within a matter of seconds and got Skype working on it with no problems. Well worth downloading, I also downloaded the Server version of it which seemed very fast. If I get a rack mount server I will definitely use Ubuntu 8.04 64bit Server on it.
World Of Warcraft on Ubuntu..
Well I was bored today so thought I’d have a go at installing WoW in Linux for a laugh and something to do. I have got it working on Ubuntu 7.10 64bit, it seems to be running faster on Linux than in windows! (as do most games.) I will place some information up on the site about installing certain games on linux when I have time, or should I say can be bothered!
Ubuntu 7.10 64bit

Well I decided to download Ubuntu 7.10 64bit yesterday to test it out and see if it is any good. I had a few problems to start with as the CD had errors due to me writing it at 50x, so I re-wrote the cd at 16x and it worked fine. After installing Ubuntu I added some of the visual effects and that. I installed Quake 3 on it last night and am in the process of installing Quake 4 on it. I will write some documents on installing both games later.
All in all Ubuntu seems really good, even tho I had to install quite a bit of 32bit stuff to get Quake 3 running!
